2027 Ram Chassis Cab Towing & Payload Guide
Compare 2027 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cab configurations for your next commercial truck. Explore gas and diesel engines, trailer ratings, chassis payload and cab-to-axle choices for work around San Leandro, Oakland, Hayward and the Bay Area.
*Different properly equipped Ram 5500 configurations achieve these maximums. Body, upfit and equipment weight reduce the capacity remaining for your load.
2027 Ram Chassis Cab Engines
Chassis Cab power ratings differ from Ram Heavy Duty pickup ratings. The guide lists the 6.4L HEMI V8 at 375 horsepower and the 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel at 360 horsepower. Use the Chassis Cab specifications when comparing these trucks.
| Engine | Horsepower | Torque (lb-ft) | Transmission |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.4L HEMI V8 | 375 | 429 | TorqueFlite 8-speed or TorqueFlite HD 8-speed, depending on configuration |
| 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel | 360 | 800 | TorqueFlite HD 8-speed automatic |
Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cab
Choose the chassis around the completed truck you need. A service body, flatbed, dump body or other upfit must match the chassis dimensions, weight ratings and body-builder requirements. The body type alone does not establish which model is suitable.
Ram 3500 Chassis Cab
The source includes single-rear-wheel and dual-rear-wheel configurations, gas and diesel engines, Regular Cab and Crew Cab choices. Compare the exact transmission and GVWR as well as the engine.
Ram 4500 Chassis Cab
The guide lists dual-rear-wheel configurations with GVWR choices of 15,000, 16,000 and 16,500 pounds. Cab-to-axle length and engine selection change the towing and payload figures.
Ram 5500 Chassis Cab
The highest listed towing is 34,540 pounds for a Cummins 4x4 Regular Cab with 60-inch CA, 4.44 axle, 19,500-pound GVWR and 43,000-pound GCWR. The highest listed chassis payload is 12,370 pounds for a HEMI 4x2 Regular Cab with 108-inch CA and 19,500-pound GVWR. These are different configurations.
What Does Cab-to-Axle Length Mean?
CA means cab-to-axle: the distance from the rear of the cab to the center of the rear axle. It is not pickup bed length. The guide lists 60-, 84-, 108- and 120-inch CA choices for Regular Cab and 60- and 84-inch choices for Crew Cab, depending on model and configuration. Confirm body compatibility with your upfitter.

Selected 2027 Ram Chassis Cab Payload Ratings
Chassis payload must accommodate the installed body and other added equipment along with occupants, cargo and hitch load. It is not the amount of material you can automatically load into a completed service or dump body.
| Model | Engine / Transmission | Rear Wheels | GVWR | Cab / CA | 4x2 Chassis Payload | 4x4 Chassis Payload |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3500 | HEMI / HD 8-speed | DRW | 14,000 | Regular / 60″ | 7,710 | 7,440 |
| 3500 | Cummins / HD 8-speed | DRW | 14,000 | Regular / 60″ | 6,830 | 6,510 |
| 4500 | HEMI / HD 8-speed | DRW | 16,500 | Regular / 60″ | 9,400 | 9,070 |
| 4500 | Cummins / HD 8-speed | DRW | 16,000 | Regular / 60″ | 8,050 | 7,730 |
| 5500 | HEMI / HD 8-speed | DRW | 19,500 | Regular / 108″ | 12,370 | 11,830 |

Subtract the weight of the body, added accessories, occupants, tools and trailer tongue or pin load from the applicable chassis allowance. Then verify the completed vehicle’s actual weight, final labels, axle and tire limits, hitch rating and body-builder requirements. Do not count equipment already included in the applicable vehicle weight twice.
Example: How a Body Uses Chassis Payload
If a specific chassis has a verified 9,000-pound allowance and the body and added equipment weigh 3,000 pounds, 6,000 pounds remain before occupants, cargo and hitch load. Adding 600 pounds of occupants and 400 pounds of tools leaves 5,000 pounds in this illustrative budget. This arithmetic does not establish axle, tire, body or hitch suitability.
Upfit Features and Commercial Equipment
The guide highlights available PTO capability, electrical interface switches, a Vehicle System Interface Module, available 2.4kW on-board power and available camera features that can support completed-body applications. Confirm engine, transmission, prep equipment and compatibility with the upfitter before ordering.
Towing Depends on the Upfit and Hitch
The source states that recommended tongue weight is determined by the receiver class and upfit hardware limits. A chassis-family towing headline is not approval for any receiver or completed body. Added body weight also affects the actual combined-weight calculation. Check GCWR, vehicle and axle loads, hitch load and all component limits.
Chassis Cab Questions
Are Chassis Cab diesel ratings the same as Heavy Duty pickups?
No. This guide lists the Chassis Cab Cummins at 360 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque. Use the correct model-family specifications.
Can I load the entire listed payload into an installed body?
No. Body and added-equipment weight use the chassis allowance, alongside occupants, cargo and hitch load. Check the completed truck’s labels and actual weight.
Does the highest towing configuration also have the highest payload?
No. The listed 34,540-pound towing configuration is a diesel 4x4; the 12,370-pound chassis payload configuration is a gas 4x2 with a different CA length.

Maximum trailer weight and maximum payload ratings are mutually exclusive; they are not simultaneous allowances. Never exceed GVWR, GCWR, either axle’s GAWR, tire ratings or any body, hitch or component limit. The source notes that recommended tongue weight depends on receiver class and upfit hardware limits. Confirm the exact chassis, installed body, completed-vehicle labels and actual loaded weights before hauling or towing. Specifications may change.
